Opportunity Overview

Reporting to the Director of Coating Technologies and Processes, you will work with the Global Engineering team at our Technology and Innovation Center on the Dallas campus. We support the industrial laboratories that make our eyeglass lenses in the U.S., Canada, and South America. The coating team consists of eight engineers (including you) working on coating process engineering tasks to support different lab processes. Four team members work on hard coating, while you and the other three will spend your time on ‘added value’ coating, such as anti-reflective, anti-fog, anti-blue, mirror, etc. You will design and complete process installation for new added value coating processes, work with equipment, peers, and vendors, and answer customer questions.

Role Details

You’ll begin by training on our current products and processes, and the industry if that’s new to you. Once training is complete (3-6 months or so), most of your time will be spent working with process engineers in our labs to help support coating processes (either remotely or on site) to gather production / performance data, analyze gaps, develop and implement corrective actions, and engage in a variety of process improvement tasks. You will primarily work independently, making judgments and completing work on your own out in the field, though you’ll also collaborate with the team to support each other as needed.

The process engineers will serve as our path of communication and will be a large part of your feedback loop. For example, our team will hand off new process elements, then you may be asked to deliver training to the engineers in the lab, who will then go on to train the rest of the employees in that facility. They will measure machine performance and turn around to give that information back to the Global Engineering team. You may also have opportunities to complete project work, such as with the technical support team.

Some of your specific tasks will be to:
  • Deploy new products, processes & technologies, and validate proper deployment through execution of validation plans, to the American Zone lab network.
  • Participate in the building of tools/scripts for use in the team's processes (support, assessments).
  • Identify training needs for lab personnel and technical support groups and deliver training and knowledge transfers covering standard operating procedures and process standards using the LOFT training modules.
  • Perform equipment, process & Rx laboratory assessments focusing on process standards, process control, calibration, maintenance, product conformity and industrial performance.
  • Define action plans w/ lab and stakeholders and follow-up on implementation.
  • Validate improvements coming from the labs to become part of the standard.
  • Coordinate local on-site industrial pilots for new equipment, processes, and tooling.
  • Prepare functional requirements that will help drive the development cycle.
  • Provide innovative solutions to problems and contribute to Essilor’s intellectual property portfolio.
  • Capture and analyze machine and production capability and performance data (EER, OEE, consumables, throughput, errors, kick-outs, etc.), and provide ad hoc support to solve crises.
  • Identify issues in product conformity, process and industrial performance and provide inputs to drive the HMC process continuous improvement cycle.
  • Communicate at all levels within the Organization on project status, progress, results, and important technical points through reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and web-based tools.
  • Keep up-to-date on relevant HMC technologies as well as monitoring competitor actions through available internal and external tools.
  • Visit with vendors and suppliers.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Do you combine flexibility with strong communication skills? If so, this may be a great fit for you!
This is a fast-paced, high-volume environment, where priorities and scope of work can shift quickly. To excel in this role, you'll need to be flexible and tolerant of change, able to shift gears and work around project needs. You will need to be a fast and independent learner, able to get up to speed quickly, willing to learn in a hands-on way with the machines and on the job, able to jump in and figure things out, asking questions as needed to ensure you are aligned with company and department needs and goals.

You’ll also need to be a good communicator with strong interpersonal skills, able to understand and hold technical discussions with others at all levels of the organization (not just other engineers). This is not a heads-down role, but instead, you’ll do plenty of work with others throughout the global organization as well as with our customers, so you’ll need to be comfortable in a people-facing role, approaching each interaction with a customer service mindset.

Critical thinking skills will be important, as well as the ability to make good judgments. Once you’re trained, you’ll be on your own, acting as the ‘owner’ of the technology and behaving as a mentor to the people at the labs you visit. Our ideal candidate is results-oriented and demonstrates a spirit of innovation. If you’re able to propose and develop new processes and techniques with an eye towards the customer environment while ensuring current processes are continuously improving, this could be a good fit for you.

In addition, in order to be an outstanding process engineer on our Global team, you will need the following core competencies and characteristics:
  • Ability to influence without having direct authority.
  • A hands-on approach with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to build relationships and gain buy-in, while still being assertive where necessary.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-growth environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • A positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Integrative, transparency, openness and honesty.
