The Department
Reporting to the Operations Manager, as Surface Supervisor, you will oversee and direct the activities of the Surfacing Department covering three shifts (we run 24/5). The team has nine employees per shift, including a Department Lead on the 1st shift, two Surfacing Coordinators covering the 2nd and 3rd shifts respectively, and technicians/machine operators. Shifts begin at 5 AM, 1 PM and 9 PM, with occasional weekend overflow work. While you'll primarily work days to have visibility across the 1st and 2nd shifts, you'll also flex your schedule each week to spend time with the 3rd shift team. 

The Role
Daily, you will be responsible for managing surfacing production within the lab by providing direction, organization, coordination, communication and employee development/coaching to your team. You'll control labor and material cost, guarantee safety requirements are followed, maintain scheduling/staffing, and ensure that on every shift, team members are working together to meet customer needs. More specifically, your responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining a strong focus on the customer, both in meeting their needs and providing them an excellent experience, by driving lab performance (i.e. service levels, quality).
  • Achieving exceptional customer care by improving quality and service.
  • Providing employees with clear performance objectives tied to lab performance for quality, productivity, service and growth.
  • Working closely with Group leads/coordinators to ensure proper cross-training is provided to employees on all processes and equipment.
  • Performing regular audits within the Surfacing Department to ensure that correct procedures are being followed and machines are properly calibrated. Immediately document and post any changes to SOP’s.
  • Analyzing problems that arise, gathering needed data, determining actions that will solve problems, decreasing costs and/or improving yields. Recommending changes and taking the initiative by implementing solutions on the floor.
  • Leading, and working in partnership with other leaders, lean initiatives/projects to improve process flow, throughput, and overall lab performance.
  • Maintaining the Surfacing Department unit costs by anticipating consumables, labor, equipment, and maintenance expenses.
  • Ensuring all safety standards and practices are maintained in the work areas.
  • Executing proper hiring processes including interviews, orientations, and maintaining current and accurate performance and attendance records.
  • Routinely following up with the Group Leader/Coordinators and communicating performance levels; providing regular and timely recognition to employees; coach leaders on methods and techniques for improving performance.
  • Effectively communicating, coaching and providing progressive discipline and to employees not conforming with performance, job requirements, department rules and/or behavior-related issues.
  • Communicating safety, production, quality, cost and schedule on a weekly basis (weekly meeting with leads).
  • Providing Group Leaders with individual performance scores on a weekly basis.
  • Communicating openly and consistently with the Operations Manager regarding the status of the Surfacing Department.

This is a production supervisor role requiring a professional with a strong service mindset that is both internally and externally focused. You'll engage and clearly communicate with your team, but also ensure the team is meeting KPIs including the number of jobs per person per hour, breakage, and carryover. To meet service goals, it will be essential to maintain the production schedule. You'll pay keen attention to the data, perform audits and reporting, effectively communicate with your team, and make adjustments as needed. It can be tricky. We run 24 hours per day but work orders come in between 10 AM and 5 PM and must be balanced across shifts.
