To be a good fit for the Department Manager opportunity, you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in chemical, mechanical or industrial engineering. 
  • 5+ years of experience managing supervisors and teams in large production operations. 
  • Experience in chemical and clean-room environments, including knowledge of safety and environmental guidelines. Experience in optical labs is preferred, and experience with digital surfacing technology would be ideal.
  • The ability to perform line balancing for both batch and continuous processes.
  • Experience implementing process improvements and workplace organization, preferably including Lean, Six Sigma and time studies. A green belt is a plus.
  • Solid analytical skills and experience managing to metrics and creating reports for leadership.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office and Salesforce.com.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in motivating employees to meet performance goals, and comfort with coaching and training individuals and teams.
Pivotal to your success will be your ability to train people and ensure adherence to processes. While you typically will work during the day, you'll also need to be willing and able to come in early and stay late to interact with the second and third shifts. We're starting with a single shift, but will add second and third shifts in the near future.

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will oversee Supervisors and teams of about 20 on each shift. As we bring this facility up to speed, we're starting with a single shift Monday through Friday. By the end of the year we intend to be operating 3 shifts, 24x7.

Your mission will be to ensure that manufacturing performance, volume and quality goals are met in your d\epartment by utilizing efficient methods and maintaining appropriate staffing levels. We have some processes in place, but we'll look to you to take a square one approach to establishing systems and processes. This will include arranging by both batch and continuous process production, line balancing, minimizing downtime and more.

Every time a product is touched, there is a risk of damage, so in addition to performing time studies to promote productivity, you'll need to conduct analyses to determine the best ways to handle items. That information should be incorporated into training that ensures adherence to best practices. You also will need to embed a lean mindset in the department's culture.

More specifically, you will:
  • Analyze workflow, yields, manpower requirements, production constraints and quality issues to identify problems proactively. You'll develop and implement solutions to continually improve the operations and meet quality standards and production objectives. 
  • Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees, and developing personal growth opportunities.
  • Assume significant responsibilities in the areas of customer relations, process improvement and project management for large scale projects throughout the lab.
  • Teach and use lean workflow concepts for data collection, analysis and planning for action.
  • Meet daily production goals to ensure the right service time to customers.
  • Monitor quality and set up triggers and corrective actions together with QA team and CI team to reduce breakages and increase yield.
  • Maximize productivity of each piece of equipment leveraging batching processes and time cut-offs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
