To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years of previous related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment preferred, e.g. multimeter and amp meter.
  • Basic understanding of PLC operation preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams preferred.
  • Previous experience in an optical lab production environment is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Strong communication skills including the
    • Ability to read/write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in a team environment.
  • Basic understanding of the Microsoft Office programs including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel.
  • Basic ability to add and subtract and understand decimal numerical sequencing.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and demonstrate good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
You will also need high mechanical aptitude and the ability to:
  • Work in a role with measurable standards and a dynamic production environment.
  • Practice safe work practices at all times and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Wear the appropriate PPE while in the laboratory, including, but not limited to, safety eyewear and enclosed shoes.
  • Follow all Lock Out/Tag Out procedures as required for both authorized and affected users.
  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous/non-hazardous waste.
  • Successfully complete RCRA training requirements for the handling of hazardous waste if needed.
  • Successfully complete DOT regulations training for proper handling, labeling, and shipping of hazardous waste if needed.
Physical demands and work environment. You must be able to:
  • Regularly stand/walk for the duration of your shift.
  • Consistently lift and move up to 30 lbs to shoulder height and 80 lbs to waist high unaccompanied.
  • Frequently stoop, climb (ladders up to 20’ high), kneel, or balance on ladders, platforms and slippery surfaces.
  • Use depth perception and manual dexterity.
  • Participate in daily ergonomic stretches and follow all ergonomic requirements of the position.
  • Work in an environment where:
    • The noise level in the laboratory is generally moderate.
    • You are regularly required to work with or around chemicals.
    • The work area may be wet/dirty and/or have a strong smell.

As a Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of production equipment in our optical facility. We'll train you to operate and maintain technical computer-controlled optical machinery and equipment, and perform preventative maintenance as needed. Outstanding communication skills are essential as frequent interactions with key personnel in all departments will be required. We'll look to you to have a positive influence on others and an ability to adjust to shifting priorities.

The primary focus of the position is to support our lab personnel by maintaining our advanced technology and equipment. Duties are occasionally repetitive, requiring analysis and use of individual judgment. Specific duties for this position include managing workflow, troubleshooting complex equipment problems, and in time may including providing department training, enforcing policies and leading department meetings. 

Specifically, you will:
  • Provide support to lab personnel by completing complex machine repair requests, chemical tests/changes and equipment changes on all designated production equipment.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance work on all designated production equipment.
  • Manage workflow and scheduling to ensure jobs are completed and customer needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Troubleshoot basic electrical & complex mechanical problems with equipment.
  • Communicate equipment status to production personnel, coworkers, and management.
  • Perform general repairs on the building, and occasionally, during extreme weather conditions while performing duties outside year-round.
  • Test, check, adjust and tune production equipment to maintain quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair pneumatic devices and hydraulic systems.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of spare parts and ordering when needed.
  • Provide technical support to production supervisors for process innovation and improvement.
  • Create and supervise cost saving, productivity and quality improvement projects.
  • Assist in training of new hires and conduct training on any new products/process for all employees within the department.
  • Log and maintain equipment performance data.
  • Lead, facilitate and document department meetings and participate in all safety trainings.
  • Assist in maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used.
  • Perform basic plumbing tasks including soldering and pipe fitting.
  • Maintain accurate hazardous waste shipping files if needed.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools in performing machine, building, and grounds maintenance.
  • Perform daily lab safety audits to determine if anything does not meet requirements.
  • Actively participate in daily department meetings, safety meetings, and/or employee committee meetings.
