Research and Development Engineer - Plastics

Title: Research and Development Engineer - Plastics

Location: Dudley, Massachusetts
Job Purpose:
Essilor is seeking a dynamic Engineer to fill this experienced level role to work on innovative processes, equipment, and materials at our Gentex Optics lab. This position will report to the Senior Scientist and will have the opportunity to work within a rich and diverse resource team collaborating with others in R&D, Engineering, Operations, vendors, etc., located in our Research and Development facility in Dudley, Massachusetts.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Conduct hands-on experimental work using floor-scale R&D processes
- Carry out polymer extrusion, R2R lamination, & molding experiments, including:
- Machinery set up / tear-down, and maintenance
- Microstructure patterning and replication
- Process set up and modifications
- Coating formulation, resin compounding, and their usage
- Thermo-mechanical testing and characterization of films, laminates, and molded parts
- Conduct film converting experiments and unit operations
- Provide meaningful data using platform scale equipment and analytical using statistical techniques
- Provide input toward successful experimental designs
- Participate as an active member of a worldwide research activity team
- Support innovation linked to active programs or studies
- Provide oral and written inputs for work on projects
- Use appropriate data management and capitalization tools
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
- Driven to complete projects on time using high-quality standards and with a get-it-done discipline
- Ability to document process and experimental results with proper lab notebook entries, technical memos, and presentations
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional working groups, skill levels and expertise in a global environment
- Demonstrate a spirit of innovation, a willingness to suggest and the ability to support the implementation of modifications of existing equipment and processes used in the innovation process
- Flexibility in work assignments to accommodate group and personal goals
- Proactive in learning about many technologies
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% annually
